Transcript Offered Instead of Required Synchronized Captions

1.2.2 — Captions (Prerecorded)

Scenario

Setting

A social media platform's settings menu

What’s wrong

Only a transcript provided when synchronized captions are required (transcript alone doesn't satisfy 1.2.2).

Example

A QA pass on a social media platform's settings menu turns this up: only a transcript provided when synchronized captions are required (transcript alone doesn't satisfy 1.2.2).

Why it matters

Deaf and hard-of-hearing viewers, and anyone watching video without sound. On a social media platform's settings menu, that means they can't tell what the image or video is showing.

How to test

Look for a caption track (CC) on the video: if only a separate transcript link is offered with no synchronized captions, it fails Level A.

How to fix

Synchronized captions must be provided covering all dialogue, speaker identification, and important sounds.

Outcome

With the fix in place on a social media platform's settings menu, they hear or read what the media conveys.

Who is affected

Deaf and hard-of-hearing viewers, and anyone watching video without sound.
