The EAA became enforceable on June 28, 2025, and unlike earlier EU accessibility rules that mostly targeted the public sector, it reaches private companies selling covered products and services to EU consumers, including computers, e-commerce platforms, banking services, and audiovisual media.
It currently points to EN 301 549 v3.2.1, which itself incorporates WCAG 2.1 Level AA, as the presumption-of-conformity standard; a newer version aligned to WCAG 2.2 was published in September 2026 and is expected to become the reference once formally cited in the EU Official Journal. Enforcement has already begun, with the first lawsuits filed in France in late 2025.
