New York State Human Rights Law

A New York state civil rights law prohibiting disability discrimination in places of public accommodation, increasingly applied by courts and regulators to commercial websites.

The New York State Human Rights Law prohibits discrimination based on disability in employment, housing, and places of public accommodation. Alongside the New York City Human Rights Law, it has become a frequent basis for web accessibility lawsuits against businesses operating in New York, often paired with an ADA Title III claim in the same filing.

New York’s state and city human rights laws are generally considered to extend broader protection than federal law in some respects, which is part of why New York remains one of the most active US states for accessibility-related litigation.
