Success Criterion

A success criterion is a single, individually testable requirement within WCAG, numbered like 1.4.3 or 2.4.7, that a page either passes or fails.

WCAG 2.2 contains 86 success criteria in total, each assigned to one of the four POUR principles and to a conformance level (A, AA, or AAA). Each one is written to be objectively testable, for example 1.4.3 Contrast (Minimum) specifies an exact contrast ratio rather than a vague instruction to “use readable colors.”

Auditors reference success criteria by number in reports so findings are precise and reproducible, and each one has an official W3C “Understanding” document explaining its intent and how to test it.
