The Equality Act 2010 consolidated earlier UK anti-discrimination legislation into a single law and lists disability among nine protected characteristics. It creates a duty on service providers, including website and app operators, to make reasonable adjustments so disabled people are not put at a substantial disadvantage compared to non-disabled users.
Unlike the more specific Public Sector Bodies Accessibility Regulations, the Equality Act applies broadly to private businesses as well as public bodies, and it is the law most often cited in UK web accessibility litigation and demand letters against commercial websites.
