An accessibility overlay alternative replaces a JavaScript widget with real accessibility work: a manual audit of the underlying site, source-code remediation of the barriers it finds, and a retest with assistive technology. Overlays try to patch pages in the browser after they load, so the HTML, forms, menus and dialogs that cause problems stay the same. In 2025 the US Federal Trade Commission finalized an order requiring overlay vendor accessiBe to pay $1 million over claims that its tool could make any website WCAG compliant, and EcomBack found that 496 of 2,045 ADA website lawsuits filed in the first half of 2026 (24.25%) targeted sites that already had a widget installed. Replacing the overlay with fixed code is how you reach WCAG 2.2 AA and keep it.
Overlay replacement means taking the accessibility widget off your site and fixing what it was supposed to fix, properly. We find the barriers people with disabilities actually hit, change the code that causes them, and prove the fixes work, so your site is accessible without a toolbar or a monthly script subscription.
- Manual WCAG 2.2 AA audit with the overlay switched off
- Source-code fixes in your theme, components and templates, not a script on top
- Safe overlay removal plan with your developers, including tag managers and apps
- Retesting with NVDA, JAWS, VoiceOver, TalkBack and a keyboard
- Accessibility statement and evidence you can show customers and counsel

Overlays do not change your source code
An overlay loads after your page and tries to repair it in the browser. The markup, components and content that create barriers stay exactly as they were, so the same problems return on every new page, product or release.
Users with disabilities reject them
Screen reader users already have the assistive technology they need. They need websites that work with it. Many overlay toolbars duplicate features users already have, and some interfere with the screen reader or keyboard settings people rely on.
Practitioners rate them as ineffective
In WebAIM's Survey of Web Accessibility Practitioners #3, 67% of respondents rated overlays, plugins and widgets that automate accessibility changes as not at all or not very effective, and 72% of respondents with disabilities said the same.
Regulators have acted on overlay claims
In April 2025 the FTC approved a final order requiring accessiBe to pay $1 million. The FTC alleged its claims that the accessWidget plug-in could make any website WCAG compliant were false, misleading or unsubstantiated.
Widgets do not stop ADA lawsuits
EcomBack's 2026 mid-year report counted 2,045 ADA website lawsuits from January to June 2026, and 496 of them (24.25%) were filed against websites that already had an accessibility widget installed.
Fixed code keeps working
Once a barrier is fixed in a shared template or component, it stays fixed on every page that uses it, with no script to load, no subscription to renew and no third-party code between your users and your content.
What is included
Overlay Widgets And Toolbars
accessiBe, UserWay, AudioEye, EqualWeb and similar plug-ins that add an accessibility menu, profiles or automatic fixes through a script.
Ecommerce Stores
Shopify, WooCommerce and Magento storefronts where overlay apps are common: navigation, filters, product pages, cart and checkout-adjacent flows.
WordPress And CMS Sites
Themes, page builders, blocks, forms and plugins on WordPress, Drupal and other CMSs that had an overlay plugin added instead of fixes.
Web Applications
Portals, dashboards and SaaS products where a widget was added to the marketing site or app instead of fixing components.
Design Systems And Components
Shared headers, menus, dialogs, carousels and form patterns, so one fix repairs every page that uses the component.
Accessibility Statements
Statements, policies and procurement answers that currently rely on overlay vendor claims, rewritten around real testing evidence.
What it covers
Overlay Removal Audit
A manual WCAG 2.2 AA audit of your key templates and journeys with the overlay disabled, showing the barriers users actually face and what the overlay changes, if anything.
accessiBe Alternative
Replace accessWidget with fixes in your own code, keyboard and screen reader testing, and an accessibility statement based on evidence rather than vendor claims.
UserWay Alternative
Move from a toolbar and automatic fixes to accessible menus, forms, images and dialogs built into your theme or components.
AudioEye Alternative
Turn automated findings and script-based patches into permanent source-code fixes your developers own, then verify them with assistive technology.
Shopify Overlay App Replacement
Remove accessibility apps from Shopify themes and fix product, collection, cart and navigation barriers in Liquid, sections and app embeds.
WordPress Overlay Plugin Replacement
Remove widget plugins and fix theme, block, page builder, form and WooCommerce accessibility issues at the source.
Keyboard Traps And Focus Problems
We often find menus, carousels, modals and cookie banners that trap keyboard focus or hide it, plus the overlay toolbar itself adding extra tab stops before the main content. We fix focus order, visible focus and keyboard operation in the components themselves.
Screen Reader Conflicts
Injected ARIA attributes and duplicate announcements can make pages harder to use with NVDA, JAWS and VoiceOver. We remove guesswork ARIA and use native HTML and correct names, roles and states so screen readers announce controls accurately.
Auto-Generated Alt Text
Machine-written image descriptions are often vague or wrong, especially for products, charts and text in images. We write meaningful alternatives, mark decorative images correctly and fix image text in your templates.
Forms And Error Messages
Overlays rarely repair unlabeled fields, unclear errors or inaccessible checkout and sign-up steps. We fix labels, instructions, error messages, required fields and autocomplete so people can complete forms.
Colour Contrast And Visual Design
Contrast toggles in a toolbar do not fix the default design most users see. We correct low-contrast text, focus indicators, non-text contrast and colour-only cues in your CSS and design tokens.
Inaccessible Widgets And Dynamic Content
Custom dropdowns, tabs, accordions, filters and live updates need correct behaviour in code. We rebuild or fix them using proven patterns so status changes and errors are announced.
Third-Party Script Weight And Privacy
An overlay is extra third-party JavaScript on every page. Removing it, once the real fixes are in, takes away a dependency, a subscription and a script that processes visitor interactions.
Misleading Compliance Claims
Statements such as ‘this site is fully compliant’ based on a widget can backfire. We rewrite your accessibility statement around the standard you test against, known limitations and a contact route for users.

95.9% of top home pages fail WCAG In the 2026 WebAIM Million, 95.9% of the top one million home pages had detectable WCAG 2 failures, averaging 56.1 errors per page. 96% of those errors fell into six fixable categories: low-contrast text, missing alternative text, missing form labels, empty links, empty buttons and missing document language. Fixing them in shared components removes most barriers fastest.

Manual validation is essential. Automated tools alone cannot verify keyboard flow, screen reader output, reading order or meaningful alt text. In a UK Government Digital Service audit of 13 automated tools against 142 deliberate barriers, the best tool fully found only 40% and the weakest 13%, which is why every fix we make is checked by a person.

01
Free overlay assessment
Tell us which overlay you use, which pages matter most and what is driving the change: a demand letter, a customer complaint, a procurement review or a renewal date. We confirm the target standard, usually WCAG 2.2 AA, and recommend a starting point.
-
02
Audit with the overlay switched off
We test your key templates and journeys by hand with the widget disabled, using a keyboard, NVDA, JAWS, VoiceOver and TalkBack, plus automated scans. This shows what people with disabilities actually encounter and what the overlay does or does not change.
-
03
Map findings to root causes
Each issue gets a WCAG reference, severity and the component, template or content pattern that causes it, so one fix in a shared header, form or product card clears every page that uses it.
-
04
Fix the source code
Our developers fix the highest-impact barriers first, in your theme, components and content, or we hand your team clear tickets and code examples. Typical first targets are navigation, forms, checkout and dialogs.
-
05
Remove the overlay safely
With your developers we remove the overlay script, app or plugin, including copies loaded through tag managers or theme settings, and check nothing else depended on it.
-
06
Retest with assistive technology
We retest every fixed issue and the key journeys end to end with screen readers and a keyboard, and record before-and-after evidence.
-
07
Update your statement and keep it fixed
We help you publish an honest accessibility statement and, if you want, set up monitoring so new releases do not reintroduce barriers.
WCAG 2.2 AA
The current W3C Recommendation and the level we test and fix to. Content that conforms to WCAG 2.2 also conforms to WCAG 2.0 and 2.1.
ADA Title II And Title III
The DOJ Title II rule requires state and local government websites and apps to meet WCAG 2.1 AA by April 26, 2027 (populations of 50,000 or more) or April 26, 2028 (smaller entities and special districts). Title III sets no web standard, so businesses use WCAG to show their sites are accessible.
Section 508
The Revised Section 508 Standards require U.S. federal agency ICT to conform to WCAG 2.0 Level A and AA, and federal buyers ask vendors for the same evidence.
EAA And EN 301 549
The European Accessibility Act has applied since June 28, 2025 to covered products and services sold to EU consumers. EN 301 549, which builds on WCAG, is the practical technical benchmark.
