Our Shopify accessibility audit follows the path your customers take, from search and collections to product pages, the cart and checkout, and tests each step by hand with a keyboard, NVDA, JAWS and VoiceOver against WCAG 2.2 Level AA. Shopify maintains its own checkout and publishes a checkout accessibility conformance report, but your theme, apps and checkout customizations are yours to fix, so that is where we look hardest. Want the background first? Read is Shopify ADA compliant?
Menus, search, filters, sorting and collection grids, checked so shoppers can find products with a keyboard or a screen reader.
Product images and alt text, variant selectors and swatches, reviews, and the add-to-cart button with its confirmation message.
Focus moves into and out of the cart drawer, quantity changes are announced, and upsell blocks can be reached and dismissed.
The full journey from cart to order confirmation, including the checkout extensions, payment buttons and apps you added to Shopify's checkout.
Login, sign-up and account pages, plus contact, newsletter and back-in-stock forms: labels, error messages and required fields.
Reviews, upsell, chat, pop-up and loyalty apps are tested on the pages they load on, because app code can break an otherwise accessible theme.
A Shopify accessibility audit from HalfAccessible is a $2,000 flat-fee, fully manual WCAG 2.2 Level AA review of your storefront, product pages, cart, installed apps and checkout, including real assistive technology testing with NVDA, JAWS, VoiceOver and keyboard-only navigation. It covers up to 25 templates or flows and includes a severity-ranked report, developer-ready Liquid and theme fix guidance, a re-test after remediation, an accessibility statement draft and 90 days of support, led by our IAAP-certified founder (CPACC, WAS, CPWA) with 10+ years of accessibility experience.
Shopify builds and maintains its own checkout, and its March 2026 checkout conformance report tests it against WCAG 2.2 Level A and AA, yet still lists items such as contrast, focus visibility and target size as only partially supported. Everything Shopify does not control, your theme, product pages, cart drawer, filters, apps and checkout customizations, is where most failures and most lawsuit risk sit. This audit covers all of it.
Purpose-built for how Shopify stores actually work: theme templates, Liquid-rendered components, third-party apps, and the checkout journey.
Standard Shopify themes and custom builds that need full WCAG 2.2 coverage.
Larger stores with custom checkout extensions, complex product catalogs, and multiple apps.
Pre-launch or post-launch accessibility validation for client stores.
E-commerce sites drew 79% of US digital accessibility lawsuits in the first half of 2026, according to UsableNet's 2026 Midyear Report.
Shopify accessibility audits map every barrier on the path from search to order confirmation. These eight issue types show what we check, common failures, typical Liquid fixes and the WCAG 2.2 criteria behind each one.
Ecommerce WCAG auditing follows real shopping tasks, not a URL list, so every barrier is caught where customers actually buy.
Product pages are where most Shopify stores fail: swatches, prices and stock updates often leave keyboard and screen reader users behind.
aria-live for price and stock (WCAG 4.1.3), visually hidden “regular / sale” text, and themes that output image.alt.Collection filters and search often refresh the grid without telling screen reader users what changed, or they rely on drag-only controls.
Cart drawers, newsletter pop-ups, age gates and chat widgets are where keyboard users get stuck mid-purchase.
WCAG 2.2 added nine success criteria; six at A/AA catch Shopify themes that still target older checklists.
Most Shopify accessibility failures live in theme Liquid, so the report names the section, snippet or block behind each issue.
divs, missing labels, contrast under 4.5:1 for body text, and themes that ignore image.alt / image_tag.<button> for actions, labeled fields, skip link on focus, and Theme Store–required alt patterns; app-owned barriers are documented for the vendor.A public accessibility statement turns audit findings into a clear commitment customers and regulators can read.
An audit only lowers risk once issues are fixed; remediation is ordered by purchase-blocking impact first.

The core technical standard behind every finding. We test Shopify storefronts and checkout journeys against WCAG 2.2 success criteria.
The legal frame cited in most US e-commerce demand letters. The ADA sets no technical web standard for private businesses, so courts and settlements usually point to WCAG 2.1 or 2.2 Level AA. We align findings with the Justice Department’s ADA web guidance.
Relevant for stores selling to US federal agencies or schools. The Revised Section 508 Standards incorporate WCAG 2.0 Level AA; see Section508.gov for federal ICT accessibility requirements.
EU-facing stores fall under the European Accessibility Act (Directive 2019/882), which has applied to e-commerce services since June 28, 2025, with EN 301 549 as the usual technical benchmark. Microenterprises providing services (fewer than 10 staff and no more than €2 million turnover or balance sheet) are exempt.
We review theme and Liquid patterns against Shopify.dev theme accessibility best practices, test your installed apps, and check the gaps Shopify itself lists in its March 2026 checkout conformance report.
Relevant for India-facing Shopify stores that need alignment with IS 17802 and the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act framework.
JAWS, NVDA, VoiceOver, and keyboard-only passes on the real purchase journey — not automated scans alone.
Automated scanning finds low-hanging issues; manual review and AT testing catch cart, checkout, and app failures machines miss.
Every issue ranked by real user impact and mapped to WCAG 2.2.

Shopify stores have a specific, repeatable structure — theme templates, cart/checkout flow, app integrations — so this audit is scoped and priced around exactly that, covering up to 25 templates including your full purchase journey.
Yes, including custom themes and Shopify Plus stores — we audit what is actually rendered, not a specific theme’s source code in isolation.
We test how your installed apps affect accessibility of the pages they appear on; app-level source code fixes are the app vendor’s responsibility, but we will tell you exactly what is broken and how it impacts your customers.
Yes — full manual testing runs through your real purchase flow from product page to order confirmation.
High. E-commerce sites drew 79% of US digital accessibility lawsuits in the first half of 2026, according to UsableNet’s 2026 Midyear Report, and an inaccessible product page, cart or checkout is the most common trigger. See the Justice Department’s ADA web guidance, our ADA website lawsuit statistics for 2026 and our Shopify ADA compliant overview for context.
Shopify maintains its own checkout and publishes a checkout accessibility conformance report (March 2026) that tests it against WCAG 2.2 Level A and AA. That report still lists several criteria as only partially supported, including contrast, focus visibility, focus order and target size, and it does not cover your theme, cart, apps, branding or checkout extensions. Shopify also publishes theme accessibility best practices, but your theme customizations, product content, images and installed apps are where most real-world failures occur, and this Shopify accessibility audit covers all of it.
A severity-ranked report with developer-ready fix guidance and code samples, a free re-test once you have implemented fixes, an accessibility statement draft for your store, and 90 days of support.
10-14 business days from scoping to final report.
Yes — the same scope and process apply to WooCommerce, BigCommerce, Magento, and custom storefronts; this page is built around Shopify specifically since that is where most of our e-commerce clients run. See our ecommerce WCAG auditing and remediation services for other platforms, third-party apps and plugins.
Absolutely. If you are not sure this is the right scope yet, book a free 30-minute call first and we will confirm the scope before you commit to the full audit. For a technical walkthrough, book the $100 1-hour consultation.
Our Shopify Accessibility Audit is $2,000 flat for up to 25 templates or flows, including your full purchase journey, a re-test of fixed issues, an accessibility statement draft and 90 days of support. For a first look, the $500 Quick Audit covers up to 5 page templates with a top-10 issues report, and a 1-hour technical accessibility consultation (audit walkthrough, developer Q&A or live issue review) is $100. First conversations are a free 30-minute call. Multi-store and enterprise programs are quoted separately. See pricing.
Not on its own. Shopify tests its checkout against WCAG 2.2 Level A and AA and its Dawn theme against WCAG 2.1 (see the Shopify accessibility statement), but its own reports list known gaps, and WCAG conformance depends on your whole store: the theme you chose and customized, product images and descriptions, color choices, apps and any custom code. A store can sit on an accessible platform and still fail WCAG on its product and cart pages.
WCAG 2.2 became a W3C Recommendation on October 5, 2023 and is the current version of the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines. It adds criteria that often catch Shopify stores, such as Focus Not Obscured (sticky headers and cart drawers covering the focused item), Target Size (small swatches and quantity buttons), Redundant Entry and Accessible Authentication at checkout and login. US settlements still often cite WCAG 2.1 AA, so we test against WCAG 2.2 AA, which covers both.
No. Overlay widgets sit on top of your theme without fixing its code, and UsableNet’s 2026 midyear data again tracks lawsuits filed against stores that already use them. A manual audit and real fixes in your theme are what reduce risk. Read why accessibility overlays do not stop ADA lawsuits.
For EU customers, effectively yes: under Article 13 and Annex V of the European Accessibility Act, service providers must publish information explaining how their service meets the accessibility requirements. The ADA does not require a statement, but a clear one with a contact route helps customers report problems before they become complaints. Every Shopify audit includes an accessibility statement draft based on your actual test results.
Yes. Our accessible Shopify development and accessibility remediation teams fix theme Liquid, CSS and JavaScript issues directly, and the free re-test confirms each fix. For problems inside third-party apps, we document the barrier and its impact so you can take it to the app vendor or replace the app.
If you sell to consumers in the EU, very likely. The European Accessibility Act has applied to e-commerce services since June 28, 2025, and EN 301 549, which builds on WCAG, is the usual technical benchmark. Microenterprises providing services, with fewer than 10 staff and an annual turnover or balance sheet total of no more than €2 million, are exempt. Our European Accessibility Act guide explains what to check.
Ecommerce WCAG auditing is a manual test of an online store against the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines that follows the tasks customers actually complete: browsing collections, searching and filtering, choosing product options, using the cart, checking out and managing an account. A good audit uses a keyboard and real screen readers alongside automated tools, and maps every failure to a WCAG 2.2 success criterion with a fix. Our Shopify audit is $2,000 for up to 25 templates or flows. For WooCommerce, BigCommerce or custom stores, see our ecommerce accessibility services or start with a $500 Quick Audit.
At minimum: your commitment to accessibility, the standard you aim for (usually WCAG 2.2 Level AA) and a way to report problems, such as an email address or a contact form, as the W3C recommends. It is also worth listing known limitations, the apps or content you are still fixing, and the date of your last audit. Publish it as a page and link it from your footer. Our audit includes a draft written from your test results, so it describes your real store rather than a generic template.
Yes. Most accessibility failures on Shopify stores come from theme code you control: Liquid sections and snippets, CSS and JavaScript. Real buttons, labelled form fields, announced variant and cart updates, focus handling in drawers and modals, and product image alt text output from the Shopify admin are all theme fixes. Shopify publishes theme accessibility best practices, and our audit report points to the exact section or snippet behind each issue so your developer can fix it quickly.
Shopify Plus stores usually carry more custom code: checkout extensions, custom apps, B2B portals and sometimes a headless storefront. Shopify’s March 2026 checkout conformance report covers Shopify’s own checkout, not your extensions, branding or theme. We include checkout extensions, custom apps and headless front ends in the audit scope, test them with NVDA, JAWS and VoiceOver, and map each failure to WCAG 2.2 AA. For multi-store or headless builds, a free needs assessment helps us scope the work before we quote.
Every Shopify audit is led by our founder, Mohammad Shadab Saifi, who holds the IAAP CPACC, WAS and CPWA credentials and is a DHS Section 508 Trusted Tester, with 10+ years of accessibility experience. Testing is manual, with NVDA, JAWS, VoiceOver and keyboard-only passes, never an automated scan alone.
Book the free 30-minute call if this is your first conversation with us: we learn about your store, apps and deadline, explain which rules apply and scope the audit or a quote. Book the $100 one-hour consultation when your team needs a hands-on technical session, such as walking through an audit or its findings, talking with your Shopify developer, or reviewing theme and app issues on your store live.
Yes. AccessibilityScore.in is our free WCAG scan, powered by HalfAccessible and axe-core. It scores one public page, such as your homepage or a product page, and lists common code-level issues with WCAG mapping and fix guidance. Treat it as a starting point: automated checks cannot confirm keyboard access, screen reader behavior, variant pickers, cart drawers or checkout flows, which is what the manual Shopify audit tests.
